Do ds consoles have different "regions"?

i've never owned a hendheld game console in my life, and i've never bought anything from the united states other than movies. and i've bought enough of them to know that the north american movie region differ from the european one.. but now i was thinking of buying a nintendo ds lite from the us, and like the n00b i am i have no idea if it will work with european bought games. so, help, please! :)
